What I never really got was the issue around trust and provenance - before we started down the universal packaging highway, there was an aspect I remember being commonly touted: if you only download and install from the system package manager, you are given a base level of confidence of non-tampered-with software (to varying degrees). With open-to-all app shops, be it PPAs, AUR, Snap, Flathub or just-download-this-blob AppImages , where does this leave us ? AppImages is indeed like Mac DMGs, but the user-habit is same as windows pre-Store : just download random stuff and run it on your computer. Not saying this is a course we need to work to reverse - it's here to stay - but where do we go from here in the dialogue on trust of provenance ? We've done so well with signed packages so far..... ("what's this popup? yes i trust this installer, go away")

What I like about Vivaldi is what I like about Linux, particularly a distribution like Linuxmint or Zorin OS -- it's as simple as you need it to be when you're coming to it for the first time, but its functions scale with your level of knowledge and experience. To put that another way: The more you learn to do with it, the more you discover it can do.

I'm a life-long Windows user who tried both Linux Mint and Zorin in the past, and struggled with the need to use the Terminal to get everything working. But when Zorin OS 17 came out, I gave it a try, and this is the first Linux distro which has not required me to use the Terminal whatsoever, and I've installed everything I need to do the same things I am also doing on Windows. I set my computer up with a dual boot option, so I can boot into either Windows 10 or Zorin OS 17. Now that Microsoft has made Windows 11 more and more unattractive, I may switch entirely to Zorin next year, when support for Windows 10 comes to an end. I suspect millions of other Windows users may make the same decision.

I've been trialing Midori lately.. have been using Slimjet browser which has been my fave browser since using Linux Mint for a decade now.. but there are times when Slimjet has issues with the ffmpeg and video playback.. which has been the only drawback i've had using Slimjet over the years.. it has loads of built in benefits and worth the look.. i think i was using it way back when i was still a Win 7 user.. back then it was known as Slimboat.. Anyway due to the recent BS with FireFox and G00gle becoming the default search engine that was a HUGE red flag and turn off for me.. anyway Slimjet will still be my fave just need to wait till the video issue is sorted and until then i've been giving Midori a run.. G00gle seems to have it's finger in EVERY pie tho.. But if you need another back up browser Midori is defs very light.. no issues regardless of how many tabs i have open (one of my worst habits when researching stuff) news.itsfoss.com/midori-11/

Ubuntu is based on Debian and makes non-user-friendly decisions affecting the operation and behavior of the system itself. Linux Mint takes these business decisions made by Canonical and reverts them. I do not see this as being such a great, user-friendly gesture to new users. A Debian user would never be subjected to such bullshit in the first place. I don't see why they keep around Ubuntu as their standard base, with LMDE seemingly their experimental Debian-based branch. I'm also not the biggest fan of Cinnamon, or their default Windows-like configuration of the Xfce and Mate desktops. Unfortunately many distros are guilty of shipping custom bastardized versions of these desktops, so that's certainly not a Mint only problem, but I prefer these desktops in their standard, default configurations. And to be fair, Cinnamon is a hell of a lot better than the garbage that it replaced known as GNOME 3, but there's just something I don't like about the feel of it and prefer countless other desktops over it.

After Installing Mint and had it running fine I got the little icon shield saying there were some updates, well not being familiar with what some were I installed them all, then LM wouldn't boot up. After a few tries I got something top left corner with options, I clicked on one and got a repair feature so did that, then LM booted up, after that I took a snap shot. Now I have LM running again I still have that shield telling me there are updates, so has anyone else had this if so what is safe and what isn't?

Hi, impressed by your video, I started to investigate another avenues to move away from Firefox. However, I did not have much luck configuring hardware video encoding for RUclips on Vivaldi. Do you have any suggestions? I tried many things people claimed working on different forums, no luck so far. Lenovo laptop with Intel i5 and a single RTX2060 Nvidia card. With Firefox, I was able to configure HW accelerated RUclips playback with VAAPI, but for whatever reason it does not seem to work on Vivaldi, despite seemingly using the appropriate config options.

I've used Windows since the year dot and numerous Linux flavours since 2000. I slowly settled down being a regular Mint user around Mint17. I've tried all Zorin versions, as an alternative to Mint, since the original Zorin OS and recently trialed the latest version on a standalone laptop. After more than two weeks of trialing I gave up on it's numerous glitches and reverted to the solidity of Mint 21.3. Sorry, my opinion is that Zorin's claims of flashy supremacy are still empty promises. A trendy graphical appearance is one thing but above all an OS needs to be reliable

I have been using Linux personally and professionally for 20+ years. I always get a kick out of people that say "Oh Mint or Zorin are for "new" users. "Real" Linux users don't use them." LOL OK... yeah, we do. I spend all day working on systems, very very very expensive systems, millions and millions of dollars, and they run Linux --- and I get paid very very well to do it. I think that makes me a "real" Linux user. LOL. Some people just want the system to power on and work with minimal fuss. The draw to Mint & Zorin is the same draw as Windows and OSX, you just want to turn it on and use it. I spend all day working on systems, in the evening and on the weekend MOSTLY I want to just turn the system on and not dick around configuring a bunch of shit.

I would look for practical functionality. For the browser to allow to cheat websites into giving us more content with less crap: adblock, save images that can't be saved, select all text easily, selectively disable javascript (right-click button, paywall). This is not a focus on mainstream browsers anymore. It used to be that Opera (not Opium) was great at this. I also want extensive settings dialogs, and easily readable GUI. I use Opera (Opium) out of loyalty, and because I needed a Chromium for certain websites. The funding doesn't affect me the least. The VPN has allowed to bypass some bans. I only use it when I need it. When I first tried Vivaldi, I was put off by the garish red flat design interface. Strange choice while appealing to users of Opera. I haven't found the will to try this browser again. It was also quick to drop support for old Windows.
